"After immigrating to Canada in 1986 and continuing my studies in Brazil and São Paulo, in 1994 I decided to stay definitely in Canada — and in 1996 I opened my own private clinic on Commercial Drive."
— DR. CLAUDIA RANGEL, FOUNDER
Sorriso Dental Clinic was opened by Dr. Claudia Rangel in 1996, the year she committed to building her practice in Vancouver. By then she had already graduated from the Federal University of Brasil, earned her specialty in Orthodontics, passed the Brazilian National Board of Orthodontics among the top of her cohort, taught in the orthodontics department for five years, and spent three months as a visiting researcher at UCLA Orthodontic Department.
She built the clinic on Commercial Drive deliberately. East Vancouver is one of the most linguistically diverse neighbourhoods in the country, and dental care — with all its insurance forms, treatment options, and recovery instructions — is a domain where being able to ask a question in your first language is not a luxury; it's the difference between care that lands and care that doesn't.
Over the next three decades, the practice grew into a four-dentist multi-specialty clinic. Dr. Mindy Lim brought a CWRU implant and full-mouth-reconstruction residency. Dr. Karina Romero brought a DDS from Lima and an MPH from the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. Dr. Mike Zhong brought a five-year Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery specialty and an OHSU anesthesia fellowship. The clinic still operates from the same suite — 205 – 2555 Commercial Drive — that Dr. Rangel chose nearly thirty years ago.
Every bio below is reproduced verbatim from the dentist's published profile. Languages and specialty training are exactly as they describe them.
Dr. Claudia Rangel graduated from the Federal University of Brasil. She got her degree in Orthodontics and passed the National board of Orthodontics as one of the top graduated. She became a member of the American Association of Orthodontics. She taught in the Orthodontics Department of Federal University for 5 years and after that decided to work only in her office practicing Orthodontics.
She visited UCLA by invitation of the Orthodontic Department for 3 months. After immigrating to Canada 1986 she took some courses in various departments at the University of São Paulo and worked with the head of the UFPE Prosthodontics Department in his private clinic in Recife. In 1994 decided to stay definitely in Canada and in 1996 she opened her own private clinic.
Due to her extensive background she decided to work in General Dentistry including orthodontic treatment as well.
Dr. Mindy's dental education was completed at Case Western University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, OH. From August 2009 to May 2013 Dr. Mindy completed her Doctor of Dental Medicine program, being awarded the Dean's Award for Academic and Clinical Excellence.
Having received her D.M.D., Dr. Mindy boosted her work experience by completing the intensive residence program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at CWRU and University Hospital, treating a diverse and complex patient pool with emphasis on treatment planning and comprehensive care including full-mouth reconstruction and surgical placement of implants.
Dr. Karina Romero received her Doctor of Dental Surgeon Degree (DDS) in 2004 from Federico Villarreal University, Lima — Peru. She started her dentistry career in Peru working as a general dentist in a private clinic and participated in a dentistry program servicing patients in remote areas of the highlands of Peru.
She later expanded her education by obtaining a Master's degree of Public Health from the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam in 2008. She attended this university on a full scholarship awarded to her based on her academic standing. As part of her Master's Degree, she published a thesis related to oral health.
In 2018 she obtained certification to practice dentistry in Canada and is constantly continuing her education in Dentistry. Her current focus is preventive and restorative dentistry.
After graduating from dental school in 1985, Dr. Zhong completed a 5-year program in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at the West China University of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Zhong has performed an impressive variety of oral surgeries: cleft lip, cleft palate repair, oral facial and neck tumor removal, and wisdom-teeth extractions. In 1994 Dr. Zhong completed an anesthesia fellowship program at Oregon Health Sciences University and moved to Canada.
Besides his considerable talent in oral surgery, Dr. Zhong is also very experienced in Endodontics (root-canal therapy).
From the practice's homepage, verbatim: "Our staff is ready to help you. We speak English, Spanish, Korean, Portuguese, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. Give us a call and we will be happy to help with any questions regarding your dental insurance coverage and costs."
Dr. Rangel opened the clinic in 1996 and still practices here. Patients see the same dentists year after year — not a rotating roster.

Excellent service from the doctors and assistants. Highly recommended! Excellent treatment, and I was very satisfied with the results. I will continue to go to this clinic.
I had very ugly fillings in my front teeth — I couldn't smile confidently. A co-worker recommended this place. Wow, what a great job they do. No one can see those fillings now. I am highly satisfied.
